DHS Class of 1945 will gather Sept. 19

The Danbury High School Class of 1945 will have its 65th reunion Sept. 19. at 1 p.m. The event is a luncheon at Stony Hill Inn, Bethel.

City to celebrate 18th century

The Danbury Museum & Historical Society will celebrate 18th-century Danbury on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum, 43 Main St.

Re-enactors, cooking demonstrations, Revolutionary War-style spycraft, tinsmithing, Colonial dancing and more will be part of the event.

At 3 p.m., walk to the Wooster Street cemetery to rededicate the headstone of Revolutionary War hero Major Frederick J. Whiting. Whiting was a Danbury resident and adjutant to Col. Elisha Sheldon, commander of the Second Continental Light Dragoons.

A 9/11 motorcycle tribute to ride

The Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut is sponsoring the 10th annual Connecticut United Ride, a 9/11 tribute with motorcycles and police escorts riding through Fairfield County on Sunday.

The event is dedicated to the Bridgeport firefighters killed last month in the line of duty: Lt. Steven Velasquez and Michael Baik.

The 9/11 tribute ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. sharp at Norden Industrial Park, 10 Norden Place, Norwalk, exit 17 off Interstate 95, where elected officials will speak, including Sen. Christopher Dodd, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia, and Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, among others.

Some 1,500 to 2,000 motorcyclists with police escorts will ride through 10 cities and towns -- 60 miles with no lights and no stops.

Close to 100 fire apparatus will line the route, including 20 ladder trucks creating arches to hold the American flag over the route for riders to travel under .

Those wishing to participate may register Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Captain's Cove Marina in Bridgeport; or on ride day from 8 to 11 a.m. at Norden in Norwalk.

Sunday's ride will begin at 11:30 a.m. and follow Route 136 to Route 33 through Westport, to Wilton on Route 7, to Route 107 in Georgetown, to Route 58 north in Redding, to Route 302 in Bethel to Newtown, on Route 25 through Monroe to Main Street in Trumbull, to Old Town Road and Park Avenue in Fairfield, continuing on Park through Bridgeport to Seaside Park, arriving there at approximately 1:15 p.m.

There will be a 9/11 closing ceremony and food, music and vendors for the riders.

Democratic picnic set for Hatters Park

A Danbury Democrats picnic is set for Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at Hatters Park, rain or shine. Cost is $30 at the door or contact Rose Schlemmer at 203-744-0755.

Kids' consignment sale at PAL Center

The Connecticut Kids Closet, founded by Ellen Morgan of Brookfield, will have its semi-annual consignment sale and vendor show Sept. 11 and 12 at the Danbury Police Activities League gym, 35 Hayestown Road, Danbury.

The sale enables parents to purchase reasonably priced, quality used children's items, while letting consignors clean out what they no longer need.

Consignors shop early to get the best selection and earn up to 75 percent on their seasonal clothing, toys, strollers, swings, and other baby items, sports items, books, DVDs, room decor and more.

The sale is set up like a store, with like items grouped in sections.

There will also be a variety of vendors showcasing family-friendly products such as children's books, insurance, health and beauty products, photography, cooking and food products, as well as nonprofit organizations offering information on their services.

The Connecticut Kids Closet will donate a portion of the proceeds to local charities. Consignors are also given the option to donate their unsold items to charities such as he Salvation Army, Goodwill and the Dorothy Day Hospitality House.

The hours for the public sale will be Sept. 11 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Select items will be half price that Sunday. Admission is free. Only cash and local checks will be accepted.

German school sign ups under way

The German Language School of Danbury will have fall mail-in registration for German language instruction at all levels for children and adults.

Classes will begin Sept. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran School, 18 Clapboard Ridge Road (Route 39).

Women's Center training set

Dual domestic violence and sexual assault hot line certification training classes will begin Sept. 24.

The 45-hour training certifies volunteers to perform crisis intervention at the center during business hours or from home when the center is closed.

It is also a prerequisite for court advocate, counselor advocate and support group facilitator positions.

Vendors needed for harvest fair

The Candlewood Harvest Fest will be Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

Artists, craftsmen, businesses and volunteers are needed.

All proceeds will benefit the Women's Center of Greater Danbury, the Danbury Animal Welfare Society, and local food banks.
