Since March 23, 2010, Holley has been convicted of burglary and a dozen officers were disciplined, four of whom were indicted for official oppression. The video of the black teenager being beaten by white police officers shocked Houston, made national headlines and prompted outrage from Mayor Annise Parker. On Wednesday, the saga drew to a close when Drew Ryser, the fourth and final officer with a pending case, was convicted of the misdemeanor oppression charge and agreed to two years probation. The organization said the decision "provides a glimmer of hope for our Harris County criminal justice system that far too often turns a blind eye to justice by acquitting rogue law enforcement officers and issuing disproportional sentences to minorities." The Blomberg jury was all-white jury," said community activist Quanell X. "Now that you have a jury with six people that looks like Harris County - two black, two Hispanic and two white - they came back with the right decision. Because the charges were misdemeanors, the jury was made up of six people instead of 12.

Jurors weighing the fate of a former Houston police officer charged in the videotaped beating of teenager Chad Holley said they were at an impasse Tuesday after more than five hours of deliberating.

The trial, in its second week, wrapped up earlier Tuesday with prosecutors arguing that Houston police, including former officer Drew Ryser, were meting out "street justice" when they beat Holley in 2010 when he was 15.

LaFon told jurors in closing arguments of Ryser's trial for official oppression that there is a belief in the community that if you run from the police, you're going to "catch a beating."

Ryser is on trial in connection with the beating that was caught on surveillance video that shows Holley fleeing police, falling and putting his hands above his head as he lay on the ground.

LaFon and fellow special prosecutor Jon Munier tried to prove Ryser kicked Holley after he fled police, who interrupted a daytime burglary on March 23, 2010, for which Holley was later convicted.

Ryser's defense team has worked to keep jurors focused on the officer's actions in the seconds after Holley falls while fleeing police from the scene of a daytime burglary. A half-dozen officers converge on the teen, who suffers a barrage of punches, stomps and kicks from the police. If convicted of the class A misdemeanor, the officer - who lost his job over the incident - faces a sentence ranging from probation to a year in jail. Tuesday's court proceedings were delayed 15 minutes when the judge held a closed hearing in chambers to address a young male juror who arrived at least two hours late.

The fourth and final Houston police officer accused of wrongdoing in the 2010 videotaped beating of teenage burglar Chad Holley is expected to go on trial beginning Monday. Ryser will be prosecuted by Jon Munier and Tommy LaFon, two veteran criminal defense lawyers, who were appointed as special prosecutors after Harris County District Attorney Mike Anderson recused his office. Munier said he and LaFon will work to convict Ryser, but are realistic about their ability to convince a jury to sentence a former officer to jail time. Munier said Ryser was "a bona fide blue-ribbon citizen" who had to pass HPD's screening process, including lie detector tests and drug tests, which will give the defense credibility.

Instead of opening statements kicking off a two-week trial, the process was derailed Tuesday when Green, who had been admonished not to do any outside research, said he went online to learn about "capital murder." Before the trial even started, Green also persuaded the 11 other jurors and the alternate to sign a revised copy of the letter to state District Judge Maria Jackson asking that their names and identities be sealed and their names not be read in open court. Because of the letter and defense lawyer's suspicions about the scope of Green's research, Jackson held a hearing Tuesday in which Green was the only witness called. On the stand, Green admitted that he wrote the letter, then testified that he did so on the advice of a family friend who happened to be a former felony court judge and top lieutenant of Pat Lykos, the former Harris County district attorney. Because the jury had not been formally sworn in, Jackson did not have to declare a mistrial, and there were no double jeopardy issues.
