<![CDATA[ Retired First Lt. Sharon Singewald came close to being deployed to the Philippines to serve as an air evacuation nurse and tend to wounded soldiers coming out of Vietnam.

The NVMC also invited other female veterans to walk alongside the grand marshal vehicle in the parade, which proceeds up Van Zant Street to East Avenue to the Norwalk Green.

Other female veterans who have committed to participating in the parade are 92-year-old Alice Safir, who was a nurse in World War I and served in England and France; and Lt. Angela Nida, who served in Afghanistan, and will be marching with the students from Side-By-Side, where she's the music teacher.

Viewers along the parade route may recognize Singewald, since she has been involved in many community service organizations, including the Norwalk Seaport Association, since she moved to Norwalk.

Singewald was an executive board member of the Evening Women's Club of Norwalk for several years.

Singewald said that once a year she gets together will other nurses and officers she was stationed with at the Command Base in Minot, where she cared for service personnel and their families, as well as veterans and Native Americans from a local reservation. ]]>
