Returning with my mom Helen from a doctor’s appointment yesterday in my barely a/c car, she suggested stopping for some frozen yogurt. Summer is upon us! The most convenient spot was Menchie’s in West U (we usually go to their location closer to home, on 19th Street in the Heights). How fortuitous to enter and discover that their featured flavor this month is popcorn! I have to say that it’s really good, and in reasonable amounts, even healthy. Check it out! I’m a big advocate of going out to see movies in theaters, and encourage everyone to support two major new multiplexes opening in town. Last week MariAlice Grimes, Alfred Cervantes Read More

The owners of these adorable animals, were kind enough to write a caption for each photo, so I don’t have much writing to do today. The range of what the dogs really did–to wind up on this page–had me smiling for hours as I worked on these stories. (I think I’m going to do a special Rescue Ranch version of this story.) I can remember when…well, let’s just say, we’ve pretty much experienced all of this and then some! Here we go! Part I Tomorrow, I’ll have Dog Confessions Part II– Want To See Your Favorite “Confession” here? Hallelujah! A raft of bills that would dramatically alter the way beer is sold and consumed in Texas sailed through tentative approval from the House on Friday after a lengthy and disputatious process between brewers and beer distributors. If finally approved next week, the legislation will go straight to the governor’s desk without another stop. The bills represent the largest overhaul of the industry in Texas since the Legislature legalized brewpubs in 1993. Under the new regulatory scheme, brewpubs and craft brewers would be allowed more flexibility to sell their products — privileges beermakers have sought for more than a decade. The package includes Senate Bills 515, 516, 517, and Read More

Silly. Irreverent. Hysterically funny. Rude. Crude. Socially unacceptable. Maniacally funny. That describes Monty Python in a nutshell and Monty Python’s Spamalot, Theatre Under The Stars’ latest offering which opened last night at the Hobby Center, is one huge vaudevillian feast of bad taste, potty humor, old and new schticks, and everything but the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. This extravagant show has “lovingly ripped off” Monty Python’s 1975 classic film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and the result resembles a grand and gargantuan vaudeville show consisting of hilarious skits and overblown production numbers that do more than catch our attention—they demand that we stay glued to the Read More
