NEWTOWN -- This school district still mourning the deaths at the Sandy Hook Elementary School is confronted with additional challenges.
At the top of the list is hiring staff at Sandy Hook Elementary to replace some of the six educators killed Dec. 14, as well as beginning the process to hire new principals for two of the district's six other schools for 2013-14.
Page initially offered to assist with the immediate transition as the school reopened in the former Chalk Hill Middle School in Monroe, but Robinson recently said Page has agreed to work the remainder of the school year.
Just before the 2012-13 school year started, Robinson hired Jay Smith to serve as an interim principal at Reed after then Principal Sharon Epple accepted a late-summer offer to be principal at an East Hartford school.
Two weeks ago, Robinson was left with yet another principal position to fill when 14-year Newtown Middle School Principal Diane Sherlock announced she will retire this year.
At a recent school board meeting, board members opted against offering veteran teachers an early retirement package to cut next year's costs.
"At this time of great healing, we need that (educational) experience," board member Bill Hart noted.
