Pursue your interest in marine animals -- and share your knowledge and enthusiasm with others -- by becoming a member of the volunteer staff at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

Interviews for potential volunteers will take place Thursday and Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. and a training session will follow in the spring.

"The aquarium couldn't operate without the dedicated staff of volunteers who interpret exhibits for visitors and help behind the scenes," said Lisa Slinsky, assistant director of volunteers and community service. "Volunteers find that it's a great way to keep busy, share their passion for Long Island Sound, and meet people with similar interests."

Prior knowledge about marine animals isn't necessary as there will be a four-week training course, which will meet March 8 through April 5 on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 9. A $40 fee covers the costs of training materials and uniforms. After six months of service, volunteers receive a free aquarium membership.

Weekday volunteers are asked to commit to at least four hours per week. If you are only available to volunteer on weekends, the minimum commitment is eight hours per month.

You must be at least 15 years old to sign up and registration is required.

To sign up, email volunteers@MaritimeAquarium.org or call 203-852-0700, ext. 2225.
