New York Times bestselling author Bob Spitz will entertain the Rowayton community Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m., with excerpts from his latest book, "Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child." In "Dearie," Spitz employs the same skill he brought to his best-selling, book "The Beatles," providing a clear-eyed portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential Americans of our time. Barrett Books will be on site if you wish to purchase a signed copy. Delicacies from Child's recipes will be on hand to sample.
Santa coming to Rowayton
Santa will be making his annual visit to Rowayton aboard his big red fire engine sleigh on Sunday from 1 to 2:45 p.m. He will arrive at the Rowayton train station at 1 p.m. and then make his rounds through Rowayton, stopping at the corner of Crest and Ridgewood, Rowayton Library, the Bell Island gatehouse, South Beach, the Beach Association boat house and Brendan's 101. Children can also visit him at the firehouse on Rowayton Avenue from 2:15 until 2:45 p.m. Residents are also encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy or gift card (appropriate for ages 4 to 13) to the firehouse Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., as the Rowayton volunteer firefighters will be collecting toys for the Carver Center's holiday party for at-risk children. You can also hand your donation to Santa during his Santa Run Sunday. Call Joan de Regt at 853-0842 if you would like to participate, but can't get to the firehouse Sunday.
Holiday Cocktails 101
Bartender extraordinaire Joseph G. Hamboussi -- of Sails Restaurant fame -- will reprise his workshop Cocktails 101 in time for the holidays. The program, "Creating Your Holiday Signature Cocktail," takes place on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Rowayton Library. Reservations are a must. The program is designed to entice the novice to explore both new and familiar flavors in the "science" of mixology. He has held managerial positions with several New York City restaurants as well as many prominent chefs. He was the demonstration chef for Bobby Flay on the "Boy Meets Grill" book tour. He also trained and cooked with celebrity chefs Vinnie Scotto and Patricio Sandoval. This program is free. Attendees must be 21 years or older.
The 6th Taxing District's Commissioners' Meeting will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. at the Rowayton Community Center, 33 Highland Ave. The public is welcome at any meeting. For information, contact District Clerk Andrea Woodworth at 203-854-5066.
Hope lights lives
All of Rowayton will glow with candlelight on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 5 p.m. -- note new date -- as residents light luminaries along their property to demonstrate support for those who are coping with a critical illness, the loss of a loved one, or some other life-altering circumstance. This will be the 14th year that our community has participated in this event created by the Center for Hope, a Family Centers program. This is one of the largest fundraisers benefiting the Center for Hope and the Den for Grieving Kids. Order forms for luminary kits are be available online at www.CenterForHope.org. Gets kids in holiday spirit
Rowayton Art Center's popular Holiday Workshop is a fun-filled tradition that has been enjoyed for many years. Parents drop off their youngsters (ages 5-12) who celebrate the holiday season and the coming of winter with other children while making things from Model Magic, pine cones, paper ornaments and other interesting artifacts. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, participants will create holiday gifts, ornaments, cards and more in the RAC Art School's studio at 145 Rowayton Ave. The $85 fee includes all materials. Create a tree treat
The library continues its holiday CraftTime tradition with "Create Your Own Personal Edible Holiday Tree" on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 2 to 4 pm. Teach children to knit
The library will have its Holiday Fairy Yarn Mother's program for young knitters on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 3:30 p.m. with NancyJo Rambusch for kids ages 8 and up. This program is designed to help kid knitters of all skill levels work on their projects. As space is limited, please make a reservation. Bring your own needles and projects.
