Free evening event on adult career transition programs

Are you an adult in transition or considering a new career?

On Wednesday, March 13, Norwalk Community College will offer an information session for adults of any age who are ready to explore new careers. The event will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the GenRe Forum in the East Campus building.

Learn about current NCC programs, and those soon to be developed, which can open doors for veterans, people over 50, displaced workers and others eager to re-tool. Opportunities will be in the fields of health, life science, human services, education and more.

NCC has received funding from the U.S. Department of Labor, the American Association of Community Colleges, the Connecticut State College and University System and other sources to launch these innovative workforce programs for adults in transition. Partners in the effort include the YWCA of Norwalk and Darien and the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund.

Program representatives will outline NCC's current and soon-to-be launched retraining programs, which students can complete in one-month to two years.

Potential students will meet advisers, learn about financial aid and other sources for tuition assistance and explore the wide array of programs NCC offers or will soon develop in health, life science, human services, education and more.

Participants also will learn of summer skill refreshers to be offered at very low cost to students who plan to begin their studies in the fall or soon thereafter. This event is free and open to the public. No reservation is required.

"These are eager and seasoned workers, both men and women, looking for a new career pathway. We are already talking to employers who want to hire them," says Gail Howard, NCC's director of School and Community Partnerships.

The government's "Occupational Outlook Handbook" projects that 30 percent of all new jobs will come from health care, social services or education. Medical careers are expected to grow by more than 25 percent and add more than four million jobs to the economy.
