"Christmas Day 2012," an oil painting by Jim Chillington, of Newtown, won best in show for "Expressions 2013," an exhibition of high-quality works by some of the region's finest artists. The juried, all-media exhibition continues through Feb. 23 at the Rowayton Arts Center.
Winter hours for the RAC Gallery at 145 Rowayton Ave. are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free.
Other local award-winners by category are: Acrylics -- Edith McLean (second place, Norwalk); Mixed Media -- Ron Taylor (third place, Norwalk); Photography -- Robert Sachs (second place, Norwalk), Ben Larrabee (third place, Darien); Sculpture -- Pierre Lahoussois (second place, Norwalk); Watercolor -- Diane Rose (first place, Norwalk), Stan Pastore (second place, Norwalk).

Calling all pets
The Rowayton Library will pay tribute to the "Pets of Rowayton" for the sixth stright year on the library's website in March. The library also will use their pictures to create a poster to inspire the children of this community to read. Visit http://pets.rowayton.org and fill out the form, attach a JPG format picture of your pet (no people), and tell us your pet's name, breed, age, and funny anecdotes you want to add. Include your name, address, and telephone number. The posters will be distributed in Rowayton and at Rowayton Elementary School and pet owners will also get a copy. This is a free program and is open to all pets in Rowayton. The deadline for submission is Feb 28.
Sixth Taxing District meeting
The next Commissioners' Meeting of the Sixth Taxing District Commission will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. The agenda will include approval of the minutes of the Dce. 13 and Jan. 9 meetings; amendment of 2012-13 budget to provide for repair of certain damages from Hurricane Sandy; authorization to enter into a bank loan agreement that provides funds for Hurricane Sandy repairs; a Sixth Taxing District auditors' presentation; a presentation by the Rowayton Arts Center; and a presentation by Shakespeare on the Sound. Reports will be presented by commissioners, the district treasurer, the district fire marshal, the district property manager, the district administrator, the district clerk, railroad guards, and the community policing officer. Silent auction to support library
The Rowayton Library is having a silent auction for a tropical vacation for two. Tired of the cold? Consider a trip to the British Virgin Islands. The package includes a four-night stay for two adults (off-season April 1 through Dec. 15), three meals daily, and a half-day island hopping tour aboard the War Horse charter vessel. Airline tickets, tax and gratuities are not included. The value is $3,770 and the minimum bid $1,500. Email firstname.lastname@example.org and put in the amount of your bid, your name, telephone number, and the best time to call. The winning bid will be announced at the "Dinner with Character(s)" event on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10 p.m. You need not be present to win. If there is a tie for top bid, the earliest bid wins. All bids must be submitted via email or at the library's circulation desk.
Chocolate Kisses contest returns
The library is conducting its Chocolate Kisses Contest. Come and submit your best guess as to how many candies are in the jar at the circulation desk. The one who guesses the closest, but not over, the number of kisses in the jar wins the kisses and three books about chocolate. The winner will be selected on Valentine's Day, Thursday, Feb. 14, at noon at the library.
KnittingTime event Thursday
The Rowayton Library continues with its monthly KnittingTime program with NancyJo Rambusch for kids ages 8 and older on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 3:30 p.m. The program is designed to help kid knitters of all skill levels work on their projects. As space is limited, a reservation is requested. Bring your own needles and projects. First-time students to the KnittingTime program will be provided with a pair of knitting needles and yarn to start learning or working on a project.
Library to show `Peter Pan'
The Rowayton Parents Exchange is partnering with the library for MovieTime for Kids and will present "Peter Pan." The movie is rated G and runs 77 minutes. Popcorn will be served. This program is free and open to the public.
