The Norwalk and Westport fire departments responded to a report of car in the woods off the Merritt Parkway southbound just prior to exit 40 at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday.
The vehicle, a late-model BMW 550i traveled 40 feet down an embankment and came to rest on a storm drain culvert between the parkway and Creeping Hemlock Drive.
The two women in the car were uninjured, but remained in the vehicle for 20 minutes while firefighters worked to secure the vehicle and keep it from rolling over into the water in the culvert. Once the vehicle was stabilized and the driver's door removed, the women exited the car and were escorted up to Creeping Hemlock Drive, where they both refused medical treatment.
A Norwalk fire engine and Westport fire engine remained at Creeping Hemlock and the parkway until Parkway Auto Body, using two heavy duty wreckers, safely removed the car from the culvert. The parkway's southbound traffic was reduced to one lane as emergency crews worked on the scene until 10:45 a.m.
