State Senate Minority Leader John McKinney (R-Fairfield) has appointed Michael Griffin of Norwalk to serve on the Connecticut Maritime Commission charged with advising the commissioner of transportation, the governor and the General Assembly concerning the state's maritime policy and operations.
Griffin, a longtime safe boating advocate, has held the position of Norwalk Harbor Master since 1992, now celebrating 20 years of service to the state.
"Mike's resume and experience make him a perfect fit for this commission," said McKinney.
"Legislators and state agencies have turned to Mike many times for recommendations on how to improve Connecticut's safe boating laws and further local harbor management. I know he will continue to offer valuable counsel as a member of the Maritime Commission. I'm pleased to make this appointment."
In addition to his position as Harbor Master, Griffin is a member of the Norwalk Harbor Management Commission, commission's advisor to Norwalk's Shellfish Commission and a member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Harbor Management Association (CHMA).
He is also the chairman of CHMA's Harbor Master Focus Group and a member of the Long Island Sound Assembly chairing the Western Sound Council. Griffin's term began on Feb., 3, and he will serve continuously until a successor is appointed.
Under Connecticut General Statutes, responsibilities of the Maritime Commission include: a maritime policy for the state; supporting the development of Connecticut's maritime commerce and industries; and supporting the development of Connecticut's ports, including; identifying new opportunities for the ports, encouraging private investment in the ports and recommending policies that support port operations.
The commission must also deliver an annual report to the General Assembly on such matters.
