Thanks to the generosity of a grateful patient's family and friends, Norwalk Hospital is the first hospital in the United States to offer patients the "YouGrabber" -- a new virtual rehab therapy for patients rehabilitating their upper extremities (arms, hands, fingers. Patients recovering from stroke and brain injuries are ideal candidates for this leading new technology. In early clinical testing, patients showed indications of improved hand dexterity and functional outcomes.
Grateful for the care she received while recovering from a stroke, Susan Warburg and her family wanted to find a meaningful way to recognize and thank Norwalk Hospital staff, while also helping others. A new Stroke Equipment and Education Fund was started to support new equipment purchases and medical staff training to continually enhance services to the hospital's stroke patients. The first purchase is the YouGrabber.
"What a thrill for our community hospital to be the first to have the YouGrabber. My mom got great care at Norwalk Hospital and it is a privilege for us to help the talented physicians and staff to further advance that care for others," said Ian Warburg.
"We're excited to be able to be the first health care facility in the United States to offer patients YouGrabber therapy and ever so grateful to have the financial support of one of our patients to do so. Patients recovering from stroke and brain injuries will benefit from this unique form of neurorehabilitation," said Claudio Petrillo, co-director, Norwalk Hospital's Primary Stroke Center and director, Rehabilitation Medicine.
The YouGrabber uses gaming technology, infra-red tracking and data gloves to help patients train all the upper limb functions that they need to regain independence, from fine finger movements to full bimanual functional activities. "Because it is in the form of a game, it's fun and patients will be more motivated to train and hopefully enjoy a faster recovery," added. Petrillo.
Kynan Eng, co-founder and chief technology officer of YouRehab, a privately held company with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, is visiting Norwalk Hospital to deliver the YouGrabber and train staff. The YouGrabber was developed by YouRehab.
