Norwalk-based Theatre Artists Workshop will present "Shut Up and Sing!," a gala musical benefit, tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $20.
"Shut Up and Sing!" will feature favorite songs from famous Broadway musicals preceded by scenes from the generally lesser known plays on which the musicals were based. As an example, a scene from George Bernard Shaw's 1912 romantic comedy, "Pygmalion," might be presented, followed by a famous song from the 1956 musical adaptation, "My Fair Lady" by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.
TAW is not announcing which scenes and songs will be performed so that the audience will have the fun of guessing from the scenes presented what famous musical number is likely to follow.
TAW members live all over the Western Connecticut map. In the large cast of "Shut Up and Sing!" are Florence Phillips of Cos Cob; Kimberly Squires and Allan Zeller of Milford; Betty Jinnette, Jo Anne Parady, and Richard Weidlich of Norwalk; Katie Sparer and Nadine Willig of Stratford; Miles Everett of Thomaston; Kristin Graham and Randye Kaye of Trumbull; Mark Basile, Sean Hannon and Emilie Roberts of Weston; and E. Katherine Kerr of Wilton.
David E. Harris of West Haven is the musical director. June Walker Rogers of Westport is the choreographer and her husband, David Rogers, is responsible for the continuity and overall staging of the show. Westport resident P.J. Letersky is technical director and Kim Malara of Norwalk is stage manager.
The Theatre Artists Workshop, an organization of professional actors, writers and directors founded in 1983 by stage and screen star Keir Dullea and his wife, the late Susie Fuller, is at 5 Gregory Blvd., East Norwalk.
