On Monday, Sept. 30, at 2:48 p.m., Norwalk Police received 911 calls reporting a disturbance at the Side by Side Charter School located at 10 Chestnut St.
Callers reported that a male had entered the school's annex building through a rear external classroom door, walked through the classroom and then into the lobby area.
According to police, a male teacher confronted the young man and was in the process of escorting him out of the classroom when the suspect punched the teacher in the face The suspect was then confronted by a second male teacher who came to the aid of the first teacher.
The suspect punched the second teacher in the face and then exited to the front of the school.
Officers arriving within one minute of the initial 911 call spotted and engaged the suspect. The suspect then turned and ran, heading to the rear of the school and climbing over the wooden railing of a portable classroom deck in the process.
Officers caught and arrested the suspect in the school's parking lot without further incident.
Based on the suspect's behavior, motor skills and mentation, officers believe that the suspect was on some type of drug or drugs and transported him to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation.
The suspect is a 15-year-old juvenile who is known to officers, police said.
No serious injuries were sustained by the two school staff members, according to police. Side by Side School was placed into lockdown briefly while the incident was handled.
During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the suspect initially pounded on one door but then entered a classroom through a second door that was closed but the lock was not fully engaged.
The suspect was charged with criminal trespass on school grounds, risk of injury to a minor, two counts of assault third degree and possession of marijuana less than .5 grams.
He was issued a juvenile aummons and released to his grandmother, according to police. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 2.
Side By Side Charter School functions independently and is not part of the Norwalk Public Schools.
