Wilton's Steve Kalin, along with his children Will, 11, and Maddy, 8, are busy preparing for Whittingham Cancer Center's annual walk/run on May 14 at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. New this year, "Sally's Run" has been named in memory of Sally Kalin, Steve's wife who passed away in June 2010 after an eight-year battle with cancer. "We were always amazed by the wonderful, compassionate care Sally received at Norwalk Hospital. To celebrate Sally's legacy, we chose to name the run in her honor and help raise greater awareness and funding for the Whittingham Cancer Center," Steve Kalin said.
"The kids are really looking forward to the event and are excited about the chance to honor their mom in such a meaningful way. Both Will and Maddy are helping promote the event by telling their friends and classmates to attend," Kalin said.
Holly and Jeff Pivor of Weston returning co-chairmen of the event, are hoping to build upon last year's success. Under their leadership, many new friends were made, teams were built and sponsorships were secured -- all in support of the Whittingham Cancer Center, they said. Last year, the event drew more than 2,500 participants and raised $300,000 for the cancer center.
"Chairing the event is our way of giving back to Norwalk Hospital. As a breast cancer survivor treated at Whittingham Cancer Center, I feel blessed for the wonderful care I received during my treatment. The doctors, nurses and staff are amazing, amazing people. This is our way of helping the hospital, especially the patients being treated for cancer," shared Holly Pivor, event co-chairman.
"It's a privilege to work with such a committed group of volunteers who all share the same goal -- to raise as much money as possible for the Whittingham Cancer Center," said Holly Pivor, a local dentist. "With representation for surrounding towns, the committee includes patients, survivors, spouses and local community advocates. This year we've welcomed many new members and broadened our base of supporters, including a new Teen Advisory Board. We're very excited and looking forward to the big day -- come join us."
Each year, the walk/run draws more than 2,500 participants from all over Fairfield County. The 3K walk and 5K run start and end at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the walk/run starting at noon. Guests will enjoy a great day of outdoor fun, prize drawings, kids' activities and entertainment by DNR -- Fairfield County's (Almost) All Physician Band, featuring Dr. Richard Frank, the director of cancer research at Norwalk Hospital. All proceeds support patient care initiatives, innovative therapies, research, clinical trials and extensive support services.
