Josephine DelVecchio Butts

Josephine DelVecchio Butts, 95, died June 21, at Smith House in Stamford. Born June 3, 1914 in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Gentile DelVecchio.

She was a lifelong Stamford resident. She worked at Yale and Towne and after raising her children, returned to work and was employed by the Stamford Board of Education Food Services. She was an avid Yankees fan, and enjoyed reading, word books and winning at bingo.

She is survived by two sons: Michael Butts and his wife Nancy of Norwalk; and Richard Leone and his wife Alberta of Stamford; a daughter, Barbara Arcano and her husband Nick of Lake Wales, Fla.; two sisters: Margaret (Peg) Serricchio and her husband Don of Stamford; and Conchetta Hadala of Fla.; a special niece, Sue DeLeo and her husband Jack of Trumbull; and a special cousin, Louise Sierpina of Stamford. Three granddaughters, one grandson, three great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roger M. Butts; three brothers: Carter, Carl and Joseph DelVecchio; a sister, Louise Benedetti; and three nieces.

Paul Casalese

Paul Casalese, 96, a longtime Norwalk resident, died May 17 at the Laurel Ridge Health Care Center in Ridgefield.

Born Constantino Paul Casalese on June 22, 1912, he was the son of the late Guiseppe Casalese and Constantina Tomasetta Casalese. One of seven children, he was predeceased by two brothers, Salvatore and Joseph Casalese and four sisters, Susie Deilus, Mildred Casalese, Theresa Covello and Marie Carder.

He is survived by Grace, his wife of 70 years; two daughters, Diane Tuozzolo of Boca Raton, Fla., and Paulette Williams of Ridgefield; two granddaughters, Teisha Ann Gustafson of Hartford, Michigan and Diana Casey of Manassas, Va., and two great grandchildren, Lauren Grace Gustafson and Ciaran Paul Casey.

Born and raised in Norwalk, he enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 and saw duty aboard the light cruiser, USS Marblehead. He owned and operated Paul's Barber Shop on Main Street for more than 25 years and enjoyed a very happy retirement that included trips to Europe, the Carribean Islands, California, yearly vacations in Florida with his grandchildren and working in his garden.

He was a loving, kind and gentle man who will be missed by all who knew him.

Benjamin F. Evans

WWII Veteran Benjamin F. Evans, 89, a Stamford resident for more than 50 years, died June 16 surrounded by his family at the Stamford Hospital. Born April 8, 1920 in Cottonwood, Ala., he was the son of the late Samuel Oliver Evans and Eura Fedelia Lewis of Alabama. He was married to his loving wife Blanche for 48 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the area of communications with tours of duty in Northern Africa and Southern Italy. He was also a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1937 to 1939 working in Pennsylvania, Oregon and Alabama.

He retired from Harry L. Thomas, where he was employed for 27 years. He had been an avid bowler, bowling on numerous leagues over the years. He loved animals and enjoyed taking his grandchildren to feed them. Whether it was a family party or a downtown parade, he was there with his signature pipe.

In addition to his wife Blanche, he is survived by one son, Tyler Evans of Sweden; five daughters, Cynthia Alberino and her husband, Jerry of Capri, Italy, Linda Evans of Norwood, Mass., Althea Tenca and her husband, William of Stamford, Margaret Breden and her husband, Mark of Norwalk, and Heather Russo and her husband, Stephen of Southbury; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Sam.

Lewis Figueroa

Lewis Figueroa, 38, of Clarksville, Tenn., former resident of Norwalk, died June 21, in Gateway Medical Center, Clarksville after being stricken ill.

Born in Norwalk on July 17, 1970, he was the son of Hector Figueroa, Sr. of Norwalk and Carmen Hernandez of Springfield, Mass. He was educated in local schools and graduated from the former Nossi School of Art of Gallatin, Tenn., where he became an accomplished artist. His expertise in the field led to teaching positions in various schools. In 1992, he relocated to Clarksville.

He was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his son. He also enjoyed NASCAR and street racing.

Along with his mother and father, he is survived by his beloved son, Tyler Lewis Figueroa of Miami, Fla.; four brothers, Hector and Xavier Figueroa, Orlando Torres and Artie Ortiz; one sister, Jackie Pettibone; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Arthur Patrick Maestro

WWII Veteran Arthur Patrick Maestro, 91, lifelong resident of Norwalk, died June 22, at his home. He was born in Waterbury, June 10, 1918, the son of Joseph and Mariannina (Canfora) Maestro. He had served in World War II as a machine gunner and received a Purple Heart. He was the co-owner of the Broad River General Store from 1959 until his retirement in 1979. He was a lifetime member of the Sons of Italy, where he loved to play cards and volunteered his time for various functions. He also enjoyed watching all sports and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Norma (Devine) Maestro, and his four loving children; Arthur Paul Maestro of Danbury, Deborah Ford of Cortland, N.Y., Janice Toetenel and Sharon Hazzard-Cyr, both of Norwalk; five grandchildren, Sherry Maestro, Jason Bouton, Tracy Ortiz, Jolie Boccanfuso and Matthew Hazzard; five great-grandchildren. Predeceased by six siblings, he is also survived by a sister Clara Mineo, as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gwendolyn Peoples

Gwendolyn Peoples, 62, of Norwalk, died June 18, 2009 in Norwalk Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 30, 1946 in Norwalk, to the late Isabella Armster Peoples and the late James F. Peoples, Sr. of Norwalk.

She attended Norwalk public schools and obtained her college degree in 2001 from NCTC. She was an over night telephone operator with Norwalk Hospital for the past seven years. She was a member of Canaan Institutional Baptist Church.

She leaves behind two daughters: Robin and Tracey Peoples of Norwalk; grandson Evan Kelley of Norwalk; one sister, Cherida Edrington of Gaffney, S.C.; four brothers: James F. Peoples, Jr. of Philadelphia, Penn., Douglas Peoples of Norwalk, Rex Edrington of Boston, Mass., and Reggie Edrington of Gaffney, S.C. She also leaves two nieces Kendra and Stacy of Philadelphia, and two great nieces of Philadelphia.

In addition to her parents, two brothers, Alvin G. Peoples and Anthony M. Peoples, predeceased her.

Funeral Services are 11 a.m. today at Canaan Institutional Baptist Church, 31 Concord St.Viewing is 10 a.m. until time of services at the Church and Interment at Riverside Cemetery in Norwalk.
