With over 400 players from 25 teams traveling to Massachusetts over Memorial Day weekend, expectations were high for the players and staff of Everton America.
The Needham Memorial Day Tournament has been established for over 35 years with over 700 teams participating in the invitational and college showcase brackets. The tournament attracts college coaches from all over to watch the region's top teams compete. With boys and girls teams from U10 to U18 representing Everton America, the Norwalk-based premier soccer club had its share of success.
The U12 boys regional team, which had beaten Revolution United (Conn.), Benfica SC (Mass.) and Princeton SA (N.J.) in the group stages, quickly brushed aside Hammer FC (Mass.) 4-0 in the semifinals to progress to the final against AUFC Belmont Cosmos. An early first-half goal saw Everton go in front before the team sealed the victory by doubling the lead midway through the second half.
The team had several local players including Norwalk's Marcus Blair, Josh De Silva and Kervens Jean-Charles.
The tournament championship follows a successful fall season, in which the team won the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association Premier League with a 9-0 record. The team is currently unbeaten in this season's CJSA Premier League and is in second place in the National Premier League.
Everton America will be holding its premier tryouts from June 18 to 22. For further information on tryouts or summer programs visit www.evertonamericact.com
