STAMFORD -- The Fairfield County Swim League has been treated like a battleground state this summer by the Rocky Point of Greenwich and Roxbury of Stamford Swim Clubs.
In their regular season meeting, Rocky Point edged Roxbury in the final event. In their divisional playoff matchup, Roxbury nipped Rocky Point by a half point.
On Saturday came the rubber game at the Fairfield County Swim League Championship held at the Roxbury Swim and Tennis Club pool.
It was Rocky Point taking the cooling victory leap into the pool as the Greenwich group captured the FCSL team title 1,106.5 points to 1,058.
"It's been a battle all summer long," said Roxbury Swim head coach Rick Lewis. "We'll just have to come back harder next year."
The Shore and Country Club of Norwalk came in third with 723.5 points and the Lake Club (554) and Innis Arden (549) rounded out the top five in the standings. Shorehaven Golf Club of Norwalk finished 16th with 185 points.
For Rocky Point, it was their third FCSL Championship crown (2003, 2009, 2012) dating back to 1991. Roxbury has won all the other FCSL Championships so this was a historic moment for Rocky Point head coach Terry Lowe and his staff.
The 92-0 edge in points that Roxbury built over Rocky Point in the six diving events earlier in the week wasn't enough to stop the Greenwich express to the team title. Rocky Point did most of its damage in the 30 girls events during the 60-event swim portion of the meet. Rocky Point outscored Roxbury, 608-512 in the 33 girls swim and diving events. Roxbury outscored Rocky Point, 546-498.5 in the 33 boys swim and diving events.
Pacing the effort for Rocky Point was 10-year-old Alex Walsh, who captured two individual events and swam a leg on Rocky Point's meet-closing relay.
Other individual champions for Rocky Point included 9-year-old Gretchen Walsh (one event, one relay), 12-year-old Kellen Carlson (two events), 16-year-old Jaimie Miller (17U 50 meter backstroke) and 11-year-old Ainsleigh Winget (one event, one relay).
Pacing the effort for Roxbury was 17-year-old Austin Bridges, who won the 50 meter butterfly, the 50 meter breaststroke and the 100 meter individual medley. In the individual medley, Bridges' winning time of 58.25 broke Dan Madwed's 2004 meet record of 59.57.
For the Shore and Country Club, 13-year-old Guido Balderrama won the boys 14u 50 meter fly in 27.80 and was second in the 100 meter individual medley (1:05.31) and the 50 meter free (26.55). Lucas Balderrama, 10, finished second in the boys 10u 25 meter breaststroke (19.91) and Joshue Balderrama, 12, came in third in the boys 12u 50 meter fly (34.50). SCC had a number of other top three finishes as Stephen Holmquist, 15, was second in the boys 17u 100 meter individual medley (1:01.25) and the 50 meter backstroke (29.28), and third in the 50 meter breaststroke (31.75). Caroline O'Brien, 17, was third in the girls 17u 50 meter fly (29.88) and Henry Tiernan, 8, was third in the boys 8u 25 meter breaststroke (22.97).
In the relays, SCC's team of Lucas Balderrama, 10, Guido Balderrama, Joshue Balderrama and Edward Stolarski, 14, finished second in the boys 17u 200 meter free in 1:58.39.
For Shorehaven Golf Club, 12-year-old NoraNoel Nolan placed third in the girls 12u 50 meter freestyle in 30.73 and 17-year-old Keith Dougherty was third in the boys 17u 100 meter freestyle (56.69), and fourth in the 50 meter breaststroke (32.13) and 50 meter backstroke (30.45).
"The county records were great," said Lynch, who is also part of the YMCA Dolphins of Greenwich. "It means that my parents will buy me hamsters now."
