The Fairfield Warde girls soccer team defeated Norwalk 6-0 on Tuesday night at Tetreau/Davis Field in Fairfield during the fourth annual Kick It For The Cure night. Proceeds from ticket sales and the concession stand will be donated to the Norma F. Phriem Cancer Institute at Bridgeport Hospital. The Mustangs wore special pink jerseys in honor of the cause. Game balls were tinted pink.
The Mustangs improved their overall and FCIAC records to 8-1-1. Norwalk's overall and conference records fell to 3-8-0.
Six Warde players were credited with scoring goals -- Hannah Allen, Jenn Maldonado and Claire Pullen in the first half, and Nell Carpenter, Kaleigh Fidaleo and Sarah Griffith in the second half. Starting goalkeeper Katie Brennan shared the shutout with reserve goalies Carly Strachan (one save) and Richelle Barone. Assists were registered by Maldonado, Sarah Reilly, Anna Glovin and Pullen. Jasmine Kishimoto made eight saves for Norwalk and backup Imelda Lazaro stopped two Mustangs' shots.
Warde outshot the Bears by 18-1.
Three seconds after a Maldonado shot hit the goal post within the first nine minutes of play, Allen scored on the rebound. Maldonado received a long through pass from Reilly, then dribbled for nearly 20 yards on a breakaway against Kishimoto, who stopped Maldonado's shot. The rebound went directly off Maldonado, and the momentum from the richochet off Maldonado carried the ball into the goal midway through the first half.
Mustangs' coach Tom Cunningham made many substitutions following the 2-0 lead.
